A two-run, two-out blast by Iván Herrera lifted the St Louis Cardinals past the Athletics 2-1 on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at Busch Stadium, to even the interleague series.
The home run came in the sixth inning, taking advantage of a leadoff walk for Victor Scott II. Nathan Church used a sacrifice bunt to advance Scott to second, who then advanced to third on a groundout by Lars Nootbaar. Herrera took two pitches from reliever Michael Kelly before connecting on the third for the game-winner. The home run also answered the RBI double that Nick Kurtz provided in the top of the third that scored the Athletics’ only run.
Kelly took the loss, only facing two batters and being charged with the winning run and hit. Miles Mikolas went six innings in the win, allowing one run on all five Athletics hits while walking another. JoJo Romero collected his sixth save of the year with one strikeout.
The Cardinals improve to 69-71 and will close out the series with the Athletics on Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. Matthew Liberatore will get the start.
