The Marshall City Council gave first reading to their budget for the next fiscal year during their meeting Tuesday, Sept. 2.

The budget received its first reading after several committee meetings and work sessions, where council members met with department heads to determine the city’s spending priorities for the next year. Mayor Craig Thompson commends the work of the city’s finance office, led by Aimee Klinge, and notes a focus on public safety in the new budget.

As part of the process, the council also reviewed the proposed budget from Marshall Municipal Utilities, after a presentation from MMU General Manager Jeff Bergstrom.

At Tuesday night’s meeting, the Marshall City Council approved the second and final reading of an ordinance updating the testing requirements for applicants seeking a master plumber’s license in the city, and granted two waivers from the city’s open container ordinance for a pair of upcoming events on the Marshall Square.
