A high-bouncing single from Jo Adell outwitted Bobby Witt Jr, allowing the go-ahead run to score for the Los Angeles Angels in a 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at Kauffman Stadium.
Adell’s single came with two outs and a full count, as Yoán Moncada charged home from third on contact. Witt moved forward to try and field the ball, but was unable to glove it, resulting in Moncada claiming the go-ahead score. Moncada had a one-out double and advanced to third on a fly-out, securing the Angels’ comeback and series win.
Adell had already been the hero in his previous at-bat, hammering a three-run home run off reliever John Schreiber in the sixth to give the Angels a 3-2 lead. Starter Ryan Bergert had walked Zach Neto to leadoff the inning before Schreiber took over, who then allowed a single to Moncada.
The Royals had scored their first two runs in the third with a sacrifice bunt from Kyle Isbel turning into a two-base error that allowed Michael Massey to score. Jac Caglianone, in his first game back from injury, plated the other run in the inning on Mike Yastrzemski’s sacrifice fly. The Royals tied the game up in the seventh with a double from Adam Frazier scoring Tyler Tolbert.
Lucas Erceg was charged with the loss for allowing the winning run on two hits and a walk, striking out one. Bergert completed five innings and faced an additional batter, striking out six while allowing one run on one hit and three walks.
The loss now has the Royals at 70-69, ten games behind Detroit in the AL Central and unable to take advantage of another Seattle loss, remaining 2.5 games behind the Mariners for the third wild card spot. The Royals look to avoid a costly sweep when Noah Cameron takes the mound Thursday evening. First pitch is at 6:40 p.m., with pregame at 6 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
