Recorders of Deeds in each of Missouri’s counties have updated their procedures to reflect a new state law that took effect last Thursday.
As of Aug. 28, the minimum age for anyone in Missouri to apply for and receive a marriage license is now 18. Recorders’ offices across the state are now prohibited from issuing a marriage license to anyone under the age of 18. The change was made in House Bill 737 and Senate Bill 43, which Governor Mike Kehoe signed into law over the summer. A statement from the Recorders Association of Missouri adds that, “all county Recorders are committed to upholding the statutory requirements of their offices, and these changes will be implemented promptly.”
Current law already requires all applicants to provide proof of age in the form of a certified copy of their birth certificate, passport, or other government-issued identification.
