Home runs from Randy Arozarena and Josh Naylor buoyed the Seattle Mariners as they took care of the St Louis Cardinals 5-3 on Tuesday, Sept. 9 in Seattle.
The Cardinals opened the scoring in the second inning when Nolan Gorman doubled home Willson Contreras with a line drive to left field. Thomas Saggese would then use a single to left field to bring Gorman home. That lead was wiped out with one swing by Arozarena, who connected on a 2-0 pitch from Matthew Liberatore to send it over left field for a three-run home run.
St Louis would tie the game up in the fourth with an RBI single by José Fermín, after replay overturned the initial call that Fermín had not beat the throw from third. The tie would not last long, as Naylor delivered the game-winning solo shot to right-center field with one out in the bottom of the inning. Arozarena would add a sacrifice fly later in the inning.
All five Mariner runs were charged to Liberatore, who took the loss, going four innings and allowing six hits and three walks while striking out just one. Mariners starter George Kirby also went four innings, resulting in Caleb Ferguson getting the win for his two strikeouts in the fifth inning.
The loss drops the Cardinals to 72-74, eliminated from contention for the NL Central title, while 4.5 games behind the Mets for the third wild card spot. Michael McGreevy will get the start Wednesday evening as the Cardinals hope to avoid the sweep. First pitch is at 8:40 p.m.
