It took four extra innings, but the Seattle Mariners continued sailing toward a postseason berth, completing a sweep of the St Louis Cardinals by a 4-2 margin Wednesday, Sept. 10 in Seattle.

Both teams scored early, with Iván Herrera hitting a one-out, solo home run in the first for the Cardinals. The Mariners tied the game in the second with a sacrifice fly from Dominic Canzone. From there, pitching would take over, as Cardinals hurlers would record 11 strikeouts while their batters struck out 14 teams. Eight of those strikeouts were at the hand of Seattle starter Logan Gilbert, who went 4.2 innings and allowed the Herrera home run on five hits and one walk. Michael McGreevy went six innings in his start for St Louis, also allowing one run on five hits, while striking out four.

The next runs wouldn’t score until the 11th inning. Thomas Saggese singled home leadoff runner Willson Contreras, capping a four-for-five batting day to lead the Cardinals offense. However, the run was countered in the bottom half of the inning by Jorge Polanco’s leadoff double that scored Josh Naylor. Naylor was also the leadoff runner in the 13th inning, when Leo Rivas belted the first pitch from Ryan Fernandez to the right field stands, winning the game for Seattle.

The sweep has the Cardinals leaving the Pacific Northwest with a 72-75 record, 4.5 games behind a New York Mets squad that still has the third wild card spot despite losing their last five. After an off day, the Cardinals will visit Milwaukee for the start of a three-game series against the Brewers.
