The Kansas City Royals offense finally came through Sunday, denying the Philadelphia Phillies a sweep with a 10-3 win Sunday, Sept. 14 at Citizens Bank Park, delaying the Phillies from clinching the NL East Division title.
It was another rough first inning for Royals starter Noah Cameron, who allowed solo home runs to Kyle Schwarber and JT Realmuto. However, the rookie allowed just two additional hits in the next six innings, striking out seven while conceding a walk. The Royals threatened in the fourth with runners on the corners with two outs, but Phillies starter Aaron Nola struck Salvador Perez out to end the threat.
The Royals would get to Nola in the fifth to tie the game. After allowing a leadoff walk to Michael Massey, Jac Caglianone sent a fly ball over right-center field for his sixth home run of the year. The Royals capitalized on Bobby Witt Junior’s leadoff triple in the sixth, with Vinnie Pasquantino hitting an RBI double to give the Royals the lead. Maikel Garcia got on board with a single, then came home when Perez blasted a three-run home run. Nola got the next three batters out, but ended up with the loss, allowing six runs on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
Perez brought two more runs home in the seventh with a two-out single. Bryson Stott added a solo shot to center field for the Phillies in the eighth, while the Royals capped their win with a solo home run in the ninth by Witt, along with a sacrifice fly from Tyler Tolbert.
The win capped a disappointing road trip for the Royals (75-75), who went 2-5 in the past week and now sit six games behind the Astros for the third wild card spot. The Royals are off Monday as they prepare for their final home stand of the year, with the next three games against the red-hot Seattle Mariners.
