
Two Missouri Valley College student-athletes have earned weekly awards from the Heart of America Athletic Conference for their play in competitions last week.
Defender Marta Carrasco Mesa was named the Heart Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week after leading the team to a pair of conference victories. Carrasco Mesa scored the game-winning goal, and added one assist, in a 3-1 victory over Benedictine. On Saturday, Carrasco Mesa led a defense that allowed no shots on goal to record the team’s second shutout of the season in a 3-0 win at Clarke (Iowa).
This is the first weekly award of the season for Carrasco Mesa, and the second of her career. The women’s soccer team is 4-0-2 overall and 2-0 in the Heart. The Vikings travel to play Central Methodist on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Felipe Suarez was named the Heart Men’s Golfer of the Week after a record-setting performance at the MVC Fall Invitational. Suarez won the tournament with a three-round score of -17 (199), setting a new program record for lowest score in a tournament. Suarez posted scores of -7 (65), -4 (68), and -6 (66) to win the tournament by three strokes.
This is the first weekly award for Suarez in his career. The Viking men’s golf team won the MVC Fall Invitational with a program-record -50 (814). Up next is the CMU Fall Invitational at Hail Ridge Golf Course in Boonville on September 22-23.
