Kansas City Royals pitching gave up two milestone home runs to Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, as Seattle romped to a 12-5 win over KC on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at Kauffman Stadium.

Raleigh led off the third inning with his record-setting 55th home run of the season, sending starter Michael Wacha’s pitch with to right field to surpass Mickey Mantle’s mark for most home runs in a season by a switch-hitter. Raleigh would add to the feat in his next at bat, swinging from the opposite side of the plate for his next home run, tying the Mariners single-season franchise record set twice by Ken Griffey Jr. And yet, Raleigh didn’t even hit the most home runs for the Mariners on Tuesday night, as Dominic Canzone sent three out of the park to lead Seattle’s offense, going five-for-five and finishing a triple shy of the cycle.

The Mariners dominated the Royals, scoring in each of the first five innings, then cruising the rest of the night as the Royals could only get extra-base hits from rookie Carter Jansen. Two of those hits happened to be home runs, the first two of Jansen’s career. The Royals stranded ten runs on base, as Logan Gilbert limited the Royals to two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out five to get the win. Michael Wacha’s return from the concussion injury list lasted just 2.2 innings, as he gave up seven runs on nine hits, including one of Raleigh’s historic home runs.

The loss has the Royals back below .500, trailing Boston for the third wild card spot by seven games with just 11 games remaining in the season. Cole Ragans is poised to make his first start in over two months Wednesday evening when he takes the bump. First pitch is at 6:40 p.m., with pregame at 6 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
