The Kansas City Royals sank the Seattle Mariners 7-5 on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at Kauffman Stadium, using four runs in the eighth inning to snap the Mariners’ ten-game winning streak.
The Royals took advantage of Mariners starter Bryce Miller early, who after giving up two-out singles to Vinnie Pasquantino and Maikel Garcia, allowed a three-run home run to Salvador Perez. The Mariners quickly responded in the second with a leadoff walk followed by Eugenio Suárez’ 46th home run of the season. Seattle would tie the game in the seventh with a sacrifice fly, then take the lead in the next inning when JP Crawford needed just two pitches from Lucas Erceg to send a solo shot to right field. Erceg allowed two singles later in the inning, but was able to get out of the jam when he successfully picked off Julio Rodríguez at first.
The Royals made use of the leadoff walk to Perez in the bottom of the eighth, when Adam Frazier brought him home with a two-run blast to left field. Jac Caglianone followed up with a double, then came home on Carter Jensen’s single. Jensen was able to score when Bobby Witt Jr hit a double. Carlos Estévez allowed two singles to start the ninth, but got Dominic Canzone to ground into a double play. Despite one of the runners scoring, Estévez was able to close out the game with another groundout and grab his 40th save of the year.
Erceg recorded his eighth win of the year, allowing one run on three hits with a strikeout. Cole Ragans lasted 3.2 innings in his first start in two months, allowing two runs on one hit, two walks, while striking out four.
The Royals are now 76-76, seven games behind Boston and Seattle for the third wild card spot. Stephen Kolek will get the start Thursday afternoon when the Royals seek a series win. Pregame is at 12:30 p.m. on KMMO AM 1300, with first pitch at 1:10 p.m.
