Marshall Public Schools Supt. Caleb Petet has issued a statement reminding the district’s staff to, “pause and consider their activities” amid reports of objectionable comments attributed to district employees.

In a statement sent to all MPS staff Sept. 19, Petet says that the district is addressing concerns raised about comments made by some district employees in connection with, “the recent political assassination”, referring to the Sept. 10 shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The statement does not mention whether any district employees have been placed on leave, but that the district is proceeding in consultation with legal guidance.

Petet went on to note that Marshall Public Schools, “respects the First Amendment rights of staff and students, but any speech that could incite violence or undermine confidence in our ability to educate all students will not be tolerated.” He also reminded teachers to, “remain neutral when presenting issues in the classroom and avoid representing personal opinions as those of the district.”

Petet declined to provide additional comment when contacted by KMMO News. Click here to read the release sent to all MPS staff.

The statement from Marshall Public Schools comes days after Hallsville R-IV Schools announced that two teachers were put on paid administrative leave after sharing posts on social media about last week’s shooting that drew public criticism.
