The Toronto Blue Jays struck first with a lead-off homer to start the game, but the Kansas City offense erupted with a 20 run outburst to come away with a convincing 20-1 victory Friday night at Kauffman Stadium.

George Springer led off the game with a solo homer against Michael Lorenzen to put Toronto on top early. The lead would soon evaporate, as Toronto starter Max Scherzer failed to make it out of the first inning, giving up seven runs on seven hits while recording just two outs.

Bobby Witt Jr. tied the game with an RBI single, then came home on Vinnie Pasquantino’s double. Salvador Perez blasted a three-run home run to right-center field, his 30th bomb of the year. Michael Massey put an exclamation point on the inning with a two-run blast to right field, knocking Scherzer out of the game.

Kansas City would add to the lead in the third thanks to a two-run double from Carter Jensen and an RBI single from Pasquantino.

The Royals continued to pour it on in the seventh and eighth, scoring ten runs in those two frames, all charged to Toronto catcher Tyler Heineman. Some of the highlights include Jac Caglianone’s seventh round tripper of the year and RBI hits from John Rave, Luke Maile, and Adam Frazier.

Michael Lorenzen pitched a gem, going 7.2 innings, allowing just one run on three hits and three walks.

The Royals improve to 77-77, remaining seven games back of Houston in the wild card standings with eight games to play. The Royals are back in action today as they seek a series win against Toronto. First pitch is at 6:10 p.m.
