A pair of crashes in the westbound lanes of Interstate 70 on Saturday, Sept. 20 in Bates City resulted in injury to four people, including one with serious injury.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the first accident was reported just before 10 a.m. when a pickup driven by a 19-year-old Oak Grove man came to a stop on westbound I-70 near mile marker 31. That’s when troopers say a second pickup driven by a 54-year-old Kansas City man failed to notice the stopped traffic and rear ended the Oak Grove vehicle. The Kansas City man was taken to Centerpoint Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. A passenger in the Oak Grove man’s vehicle had minor injuries in the crash.

As traffic backed up on I-70, four more vehicles collided. The patrol says that two motorcyclists, a 38-year-old man from Hannibal and 55-year-old man from Columbia, crashed into each other, then struck the rear of a Jeep driven by a 30-year-old man from Licking. One of the motorcycles then overturned and struck a second jeep, driven by a woman from Georgia. The two motorcyclists sustained moderate injuries and were also taken to Centerpoint. No injuries were reported for the two Jeep drivers.
