Temwa Chawinga had quite the birthday present for herself and the Teal faithful Saturday, Sept. 20 at CPKC Stadium: the Kansas City Current’s first-ever NWSL Shield.

Chawinga’s header in the 74th minute provided insurance for the Current, who had dominated possession and shots on goal but were still tested by the Seattle Reign in Saturday’s 2-0 victory. Chawinga scored her 13th goal of the season on her 27th birthday, reclaiming the lead in the Golden Boot race. The Current got on the board in the 34th minute, by way of a penalty kick from Debinha after a delayed video review found that a Reign defender had committed a handball just inside the penalty area.

The Current posted their ninth consecutive shutout to lock up the top seed in November’s NWSL playoffs with five games to spare, setting another league record. The squad can surpass last year’s team record for most points with a win Friday night in Kansas City against the Chicago Stars.

While the Current locked up the top spot in the NWSL playoffs, Sporting Kansas City saw their minuscule playoff hopes evaporate Saturday night. SKC allowed goals in the second and 43rd minute to fall 2-0 to Vancouver at Children’s Mercy Park, dropping their third straight game and sliding to 14th in the Western Conference. Sporting only had one shot on goal, despite receiving eight corner kick opportunities.

Meanwhile, St Louis City are clinging to their playoff chances, aided by a 3-1 win at San Jose. Brendan McSorley proved the value of his recent first-team contract and then some, scoring goals in the 10th and 45th minutes to lead City. Marcel Hartel added a score in the 19th minute for the ultimate game-winner. San Jose’s only goal came on a penalty kick in the 31st minute by Cristian Arango. Keeper Roman Bürki recorded nine saves in the win, which now see City nine points behind Dallas for the ninth playoff spot.

St Louis City will host Los Angeles FC on Saturday, Sept. 27 at Energizer Park, while Sporting KC will visit the LA Galaxy.
