
Just one night after the St. Louis Cardinals eliminated San Francisco from playoff contention, the Giants returned the favor with a 4-3 victory over the Redbirds on Wednesday, September 24.
Jung Hoo Lee doubled in the second inning to give the Giants the lead. The Cardinals responded with a pair of runs in the third, with Brendan Donovan launching an RBI double and Ivan Herrera drilling an RBI single.
The lead wouldn’t last, as Rafael Devers blasted his 34th homer of the year in the bottom of the inning. San Francisco regained the lead in the fourth thanks to a sacrifice fly from Andrew Knizner.
Nolan Arenado tied the game in the eighth with a sac fly to center field. Knizner once again came through for the Giants, hitting a go-ahead RBI triple that proved to be the game winner.
Sonny Gray picked up a no-decision for his efforts, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits with seven strikeouts over six inning. Riley O’Brien took the loss, allowing the go-ahead run in the eighth inning.
The Cardinals slip to 78-81 on the season, needing to win their final three games to secure a .500 record for the season. The Cardinals will finish out the season with a road trip to Chicago to take on the Cubs. The series will begin tomorrow at Wrigley Field, with first pitch scheduled for 1:20 p.m.
