The City of Lexington issued an order Friday, Sept. 26, halting all underground boring work in the city following a pair of gas line breaks in a subdivision.
City officials issued the stop after a second gas leak occurred in the Indian Hills subdivision around 9:45 a.m., as a contractor was installing fiber-optic cable. This prompted residents to evacuate the area for about three hours. Crews also struck a gas line Thursday afternoon in a different part of the neighborhood. In a statement, city officials say they are taking all available measures to ensure the safety of its citizens.
The two gas leaks come nearly six months after another contractor struck a gas line, leading to a house explosion that claimed the life of a five-year-old boy and seriously injured two others. The boy’s father filed a lawsuit in April against four firms in connection with the explosion; the case has been transferred to Saline County.
