The Lafayette County Commission gave approval for the construction of a cryptocurrency mining facility near Concordia following a public meeting held on Wednesday, October 8.

The facility, which was proposed by Evolution Technology, LLC, will be located on Walkenhorst Road near Concordia. Lafayette County Presiding Commissioner Harold Hoflander says there were a few comments at the meeting, some for and some against the project.

Hoflander says the project would bring in tax revenue for the county. Some main concerns against the project include the facility using an excessive amount of energy and the amount of noise it would produce in a rural area. Hoflander says representatives from West Central Electric attended the meeting to alleviate concerns regarding the energy consumption of the facility, stating that the company would be able to limit its energy consumption during peak demand.

The commission approved the proposal. Hoflander noted that Evolution Technology also has facilities in operation near Odessa and on Route EE, with another facility being constructed in Lexington.
