The Kansas City Chiefs thoroughly outplayed the Las Vegas Raiders, shutting out their archrivals 31-0 on Sunday, Oct. 19 at Arrowhead Stadium, in a game that saw Vegas limited to just 30 plays from scrimmage and three first downs.
The Chiefs were methodical in each of their three possessions during the first half, going over 80 yards on each drive and capping them with touchdown passes from Patrick Mahomes. Two of them went to Rashee Rice in his first game back after a six-game suspension. His first touchdown catch was for two yards to cap a 92-yard drive, while Hollywood Brown caught an eight-yard pass to wrap up a 17-play drive that included a robust fourth-down conversion, and a trick play in the red zone that was thwarted by a false start penalty.
Rice’s second touchdown catch for three yards allowed the Chiefs to take a 21-0 lead into the locker room at the half. They picked back up in the third quarter with another long drive that led to Isiah Pacheco’s seven-yard run to paydirt. Harrison Butker added a 38-yard field goal to complete the scoring, as both teams coasted to the final whistle.
The Raiders punted six times in the game, fumbled on one possession, and turned the ball over on downs once. Meanwhile, the Chiefs racked up 434 yards of offense and possessed the ball for over 42 minutes. Mahomes completed 26 of his 35 passes for 286 yards, with Travis Kelce bringing in three passes for 54 yards. Pacheco carried the ball 15 times for 54 yards, including his third-quarter score. The Raiders could only record 95 yards of offense, with Geno Smith throwing 10-for-16 for 67 yards, and Ashton Jeanty carrying the ball six times for 21 yards.
The win is the first shutout in the regular season for head coach Andy Reid, and the first shutout the Chiefs recorded of their rivals since 2011. KC is now 4-3 and will host Washington next Monday, Oct. 27, with pregame at 6 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
The weekly installment of Chiefs Kingdom from the Chiefs Radio Network is this Monday, Oct. 20 beginning at 6 p.m. on KMMO AM 1300.
