Two Missouri Valley College student-athletes were recognized by the Heart of America Athletic Conference with weekly awards after leading their respective teams last week.

Freshman Golfer Felipe Suarez was named the Heart Men’s Golfer of the Week after leading the Vikings to an individual and team championship at the Pioneer Prairie Classic at Terradyne Country Club in Andover, Kansas.

Suarez finished with a three-round score of -12 (201) to win the tournament by six strokes. He finished with rounds of -2 (69), -5 (66) and -5 (66), and was one of only two golfers to go under-par in all three rounds. The Vikings won the tournament as a team by ten strokes, with a +1 (853) total.

This is the second weekly award for Suarez of the season. He was named both the Heart and NAIA Men’s Golfer of the Week back on September 15.

Also earning weekly honors was Senior Defender Marta Carrasco Mesa, who was recognized as the Heart Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, after leading the No. 5 women’s soccer team to a 1-0-1 record.

Carrasco Mesa anchored a defense that posted a shutout in a 0-0 tie against No. 19 MidAmerica Nazarene. On Saturday, Carrasco Mesa scored the opening goal, and led a defense that allowed only one total shot in a 2-1 win at Grand View (Iowa). The Vikings improved to 10-0-4 overall and 6-0-3 in the Heart following last week’s games.

This is the second weekly award for Carrasco Mesa this season, who was recognized back on September 15, and the third honor of her career. Up next, the Viking women’s soccer team will host Mount Mercy (Iowa) in a Friday afternoon doubleheader to open Homecoming weekend. The women’s game is at 1 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 3:30 p.m., inside Volney C. Ashford Stadium.
