A Harrisonville teenager died Monday, Oct. 20 after the tractor-trailer he was a passenger in overturned along a Lafayette County highway.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the 18-year-old man was a passenger in a Freightliner that was heading east on U.S. Route 24 about five miles west of Waverly. Trooper say that as the truck approached the intersection with Route BB just after 3 p.m., the truck went off the right side of the roadway. The 18-year-old driver from Belton attempted to return the truck to the roadway, but the vehicle overturned and went off the left side of the highway. The truck then struck a ditch and overturned again, ejecting the passenger. The Harrisonville teen was pronounced dead at the scene, while the Belton driver was taken to a Kansas City area hospital for treatment of moderate injuries. Troopers say neither man was wearing their seat belt at the time of the crash.
