It’ll be an all I-70 Conference matchup Thursday, Oct. 23 when Santa Fe takes on Crest Ridge for the Class One, District 14 Volleyball title in action being hosted this week by Sweet Springs.
Wednesday evening’s semifinal round saw the top-seeded and defending tournament champion Chiefs first fight off Concordia in three sets, defeating them 25-21, 25-23 and 25-15. That preceded third-seeded Crest Ridge knocking off second-seeded Northwest of Hughesville in the other matchup in four sets, 25-22, 26-24, 17-25 and 25-23.
In the opening match, the Orioles were very competitive during the first set, leading early 7-2 and 10-5. Chief Jacey Wilsie then served for six straight points to put Santa Fe on top,12-10 as they held the upper hand the rest of the way. In the next set, Concordia trailed 18-10 before making things very close by going on a 13-5 run to tie the score at 23. Santa Fe then recovered in time to knock home the next two points and win, 25-23. The final set saw the Chiefs win in more comfortable fashion as they took advantage of a couple of four-point outbursts to eventually earn a 25-15 victory for themselves. With the win, Santa Fe improved to 16-9-4 on the season while Concordia ended the year at 15-12-4.
The nightcap saw Crest Ridge avenge the four-set loss they suffered at home to Northwest less than a week and a half ago by beating the Mustangs in four this time around. The first round went to Crest Ridge who took advantage of a seven-point explosion to turn a 12-9 deficit into a 16-12 lead before going on to win, 25-22. In the next set, the Cougars coughed up an 11-4 lead and actually trailed 23-22 before they regrouped with four of the next five points to wind up on top, 26-24.
The third stanza was claimed by Northwest, 25-17 with the Mustangs ahead there from beginning to end. Crest Ridge then closed out the action by trailing early in the fourth set, 9-5 before rallying to tie the score at 10. Down the stretch, the two sides traded the lead back and forth until the Lady Cougars went on a late, 5-1 run to earn another come from behind victory for themselves, this time by the score of 25-23. Heading into tonight’s championship match, Crest Ridge boasts a record of 21-13-1 while Northwest wrapped up their campaign at 21-9-2.
