A pair of Chillicothe Hornets are still buzzing about the Cooper Tennis Center on Friday, Oct. 24 after claiming a pair of wins in the MSHSAA Class One state individual girls tennis championships.

Lexy Smith and Lydia Bonderer will have a pair of matchups on the consolation bracket Friday morning, starting against the duo of Claire Downs and Vivian Cissna from Clayton. Their second contest will be against either Violet Villa and Ryan Deaver of Clayton, or Hadleigh Todd and Lillian Todd of Lutheran St Charles. Smith and Bonderer started play Thursday with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lafayette County’s Ada Stoner and Nora Knipmeyer, but then fell to consolation with a 6-0, 6-4 loss to Bolivar’s Kami Bryan and Jillian Horner. The pair rebounded to eliminate Payton Labarge and Aiden Nichols of Logan-Rogersville by a 6-2, 6-0 score.

Odessa’s duo of Lola Walter and Aliyah May won their opening round contest against Eleanor Hromadka and Mia Valencia of Bishop DuBourg 6-4, 6-0, but then fell to consolation when Bonne Terre North County’s Allison Scott and Kinley Tracy defeated them 6-1, 6-0. The Bulldog pairing was then knocked out of the tournament by Villa and Deaver with a pair of 6-1 sets, after Villa and Deaver eliminated Lafayette County’s Stoner and Knipmeyer by scores of 6-0 and 6-1.

Both area singles players did not advance to Friday’s placement contests. Kennedy King of Marshall dropped both her contests, falling to Miranda Yeates 6-2, 6-2 in the first round, followed by a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Layla Masena of New Heights Christian of Joplin. Seals was then bumped from the tournament by Piper Brickner of School Of The Osage, 6-2, 6-0.
