The Kansas City Chiefs prevented the Washington Commanders from capitalizing on two Patrick Mahomes interceptions, eventually kicking into gear to run away with a 28-7 win Monday, Oct. 27 at Arrowhead Stadium.

The first two Chiefs drives ended in interceptions, after the Chiefs had picked off Washington quarterback Marcus Mariota on their opening drive. Fortunately for KC, the defense stood their ground, stopping the Commanders on fourth down both times. The Chiefs would finally claim points halfway through the second quarter, when Kareem Hunt plowed into the endzone from one yard.

The Commanders responded with a touchdown drive that ended with less than a minute remaining on the clock, as Mariota completed an 11-yard touchdown pass to Terry McLaurin. The Chiefs made adjustments at the half and marched down the field 80 yards, with Mahomes completing a pass to Hunt for a two-yard score that put KC up for good.

After forcing Washington to punt, the Chiefs did the same again, this time posting a milestone touchdown, when Travis Kelce’s 10-yard catch was his 83rd career touchdown.  That tied Kelce with the franchise record set by Priest Holmes.  The Chiefs would cap their scoring on their next drive, as Rashee Rice hauled in an 18-yard pass for his third score of the season. After exchanging punts, the Chiefs would pick Mariota off a second time to seal the game.

After his two interceptions, Mahomes returned to form, throwing 25-for-34 for 299 yards and three scores. Travis Kelce led the receivers with 99 yards on six catches, while Rice added nine catches for 93 yards. While Hunt had the touchdown carry and catch, Isiah Pacheco led the rushing effort with 12 carries for 58 yards. Mike Danna and Jack Cochrane had the Chiefs’ two interceptions.

The Chiefs have won their third straight game and are now 5-3. They now travel to Buffalo for one of the most anticipated contests of the year, their final trip to Highmark Stadium before the Bills opens their new stadium next season. Pregame coverage Sunday begins at 2 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
