The Holden Eagles and Chillicothe Hornets have claimed their first state championships in softball, after winning their respective title games Saturday, Nov. 1 at Meador Park in Springfield.
The Holden Eagles locked up the Class Two title with a 4-1 win over South Harrison. Holden fell behind in the top of the first, but scored on an error and groundout in the home half of the frame to take the lead. The Eagles added to their lead on a wild pitch in the third and an RBI single by Haley Brooks. Adalyn Campbell had two singles and plated two of Holden’s runs to lead the offense, while Olivia Wooster wrapped up her high school career with six strikeouts in the win, allowing the lone run on six hits and two walks. The Eagles complete their season with a 22-10 record.
Ashlynn Daugherty’s RBI double with two outs in the fourth was the only run scored in Chillicothe’s 1-0 victory over Doniphan for the Class Three championship. Daugherty sent a 1-0 pitch to left field to score Maicee Albrecht. Landry Marsh held the Donettes to one hit in her complete game shutout, striking out 13. The Hornets finish with a 29-7 record. Interestingly, one of those losses was a 6-0 shutout in the opening round of their own tournament to Holden.
Brynn Bird put Gallatin on the board with a leadoff home run, but that would be the only run the Bulldogs could plate as Saint Elizabeth tied the game in the first, then scored in the fifth and sixth innings to defeat the Bulldogs 4-1 for their fifth Class One state trophy. Olivia Oligschlaeger put the Hornets up with a leadoff home run of her own in the bottom of the fifth. Bird pitched all six innings for Gallatin, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks. Gallatin wrap up the season with an 18-14 record.
Earlier in the week, Tolton Catholic defended their Class Four title with a 2-1 win over Kearney, while Raymore-Peculiar needed nine innings to defeat Rock Bridge 6-4 in the Class Five championship game.
