Almost exactly a year after his arrest, a Columbia teenager is facing charges as an adult in connection with a shooting death that occurred in Randolph County.
Prosecutors filed charges Monday, Nov. 10 of second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and first-degree robbery against 17-year-old Da’Caveon Nelson. According to the probable cause statement, Nelson allegedly stole a firearm from someone at a private residence on Nov. 10, 2024. During the altercation, Nelson allegedly shot into the chest of 22-year-old Ethan March, resulting in March’s death. Deputies with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office noted that apparent blood splatter was found on Nelson’s girlfriend, whom deputies say had fled the scene with Nelson before he was taken into custody.
Nelson had spent the last year in a juvenile facility in Clay County, before attorneys for the state argued that Nelson should be transferred back to Randolph County and tried as an adult. Nelson’s next court hearing has not yet been set.
