A Novelty man could face multiple charges after troopers say he pulled into the path of a pickup on U.S. Route 63 south of Moberly late Saturday, Nov. 8, causing the death of an unborn child.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the 19-year-old from Novelty was driving his pickup east on County Road 2610 just after 11 p.m., when at the intersection with Route 63, he failed to yield to a southbound pickup and drove into its path. The resulting collision sent two people from Iowa, the 19-year-old male driver and a pregnant 23-year-old passenger, to a Columbia hospital. The unborn child was pronounced dead at the hospital, while the woman sustained serious injuries, and the driver incurred moderate injury.

The Novelty teenager was treated for minor injuries at a Columbia hospital. Troopers arrested him on suspicion of driving while intoxicated resulting in physical injury, failure to yield, and vehicular manslaughter. The patrol adds that the man was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. Charges are pending; KMMO News policy is to not publish the name of the accused until formal charges are filed.
