Warrensburg Police say the person believed to have fired their weapon at a domestic disturbance is among two people found dead from gunshot wounds Wednesday, Nov. 12.

According to Warrensburg Police, at around 7:20 a.m., officers responded to calls of a domestic disturbance on the 700 block of Cedar Drive. At the scene, officers say they encountered a suspect armed with a weapon running on foot southbound toward East Hale Lake Road, or State Route DD. The suspect fired their weapon toward officers, resulting in nearby businesses and two schools, including Warrensburg High School and Maple Grove Elementary, going into lockdown.

The suspect was found dead an hour later in a wooded area south of the residence, from what was believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The suspect is believed to have a connection to the armed forces, as Warrensburg Police cited military regulations for being unable to release the suspect’s name for 24 hours following notification of next of kin.

First responders found two victims at the scene. A woman involved in the incident was treated for her injuries and released from a nearby hospital. A man identified as Tony Barron was found deceased. Officers say Barron attempted to intervene before he was shot. Warrensburg Police commended Barron in their statement, saying that he not only protected the initial victim, but may have also prevented further harm to the community.

Warrensburg Police and other agencies are continuing their investigation.
