The Missouri Valley Vikings football season concluded across the river in Fayette with a 34-21 loss at Central Methodist on Saturday, Nov. 15.
It was a fast-paced first quarter, as Central Methodist struck on their first drive when Dawan Lomax rushed 13 yards for the touchdown. The Vikings fumbled on the first play of the next drive, allowing the Eagles to capitalize when AJ Donovan threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Max Thomas. Mo Valley got on the board on the next drive when Tomele Staples completed a 30-yard pass to DJ Holly. Central restored their two-touchdown lead with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Owens, only for Valley to take three plays to set up Joseph Glennon’s 72-yard keeper to the house.
The second quarter saw each side exchange touchdowns, with Jamar Nuby scoring for Central with an 11-yard run, while Glennon connected with Adonis Whitley for three yards on a drive that saw the freshman quarterback complete four straight passes. The offenses would cool down in the second half, with Central’s Cristobal Salgado connecting on field goals from 36 and 27 yards for the only points after halftime.
Staples went 16-for-25 in the air for 144 yards, while Glennon went 9-for-14 for 80 yards. Whitley had six catches for 60 yards, while DJ Holly had a pair of receptions for 54 yards. Silas Morton carried the ball 16 times for 50 yards. For Central, Donovan completed just 11 of his 23 passes for 159 yards, with two of those catches good for touchdowns. Nuby ran 22 times for 100 yards, while Lomax added 99 yards on 20 carries.
Despite having more passing yards than Central, Valley’s quarterbacks were sacked eight times, and two drives stalled because of lost fumbles. Joshua Davis recorded three of those sacks for Central, forcing one of Valley’s three fumbles.
Central Methodist will conclude the season 3-8, while Missouri Valley will finish the year 3-7, having gone winless in the Heart of America South.
