Patrick Mahomes threw for four touchdowns and accounted for almost 300 yards, but it wasn’t enough to beat the Dallas Cowboys as the Chiefs fell 31-28 Thursday afternoon at AT&T Stadium.
The Chiefs came out swinging in the first quarter, scoring touchdowns with a 27-yard pass to Rashee Rice and a two-yard completion to Travis Kelce. The Chiefs went quiet in the second quarter, allowing the Cowboys to take the lead with ten unanswered points to carry a 17-14 lead into the half.
Dallas extended its lead in the third quarter with a 36-yard field goal from Brandon Aubrey.
Kansas City regained the lead in the fourth quarter when Mahomes found Rice for a three-yard touchdown pass. The lead was short-lived, as Dallas scored eleven unanswered points with a touchdown and a two-point conversion, and Aubrey’s third field goal of the game. Mahomes orchestrated another touchdown drive, finding Hollywood Brown in the endzone to get Kansas City back within three points with three minutes to go. However, Dallas was able to run down the remainder of the clock and deny Mahomes the opportunity to tie or win the game.
Mahomes completed 23 of 34 passes for 261 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Rice led the Chiefs with 92 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Kareem Hunt paced the ground game with 14 carries for 58 yards. Dak Prescott threw for 320 yards and two touchdowns.
The Chiefs fall to 6-6 on the season, currently out of the AFC Playoff picture with five games remaining on their schedule. Kansas City is back in action on Sunday, December 7 with a home game against the Houston Texans. Kickoff from Arrowhead Stadium is at 7:20 p.m.
