A pair of trucks collided on Interstate 70 during Monday, Dec. 1’s snowfall, resulting in injury to both drivers amid a stoppage of traffic on the interstate at the Marshall Junction.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol and Saline County Sheriff’s Department responded to the collision around 10:45 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Interstate 70 near mile marker 79. According to the patrol, a truck driven by a 68-year-old man from Virginia was slowing down because of congested traffic. Another truck driven by a 71-year-old man from Kansas City overtook the Virginia truck, but struck its rear, sending both vehicles into the median. The Kansas City driver sustained serious injury and was taken to a Columbia hospital. The Virginia driver incurred minor injuries and sought his own treatment.
A spokesman for the Missouri State Highway Patrol says this crash was one of six injury collisions that occurred around the Marshall Junction on Monday morning. Traffic in both directions had been reported stopped an hour earlier, as first responders dealt with a total of 15 collisions between mile markers 75 and 79. Additional injury reports from the patrol are pending. Crews were able to reopen a lane of I-70 in each direction within six hours.
