Basketball hoop hanging in a sports stadium waiting for the ball

Both five-seeds at the Glasgow Invitational tournament prevailed in their opening round games Tuesday, Dec. 2, the first evening of contests at the 95th annual event.

As heard on KMMO-FM 102.9, the Marceline Tiger girls defeated the host Glasgow Yellowjackets, 51-40. The Glasgow girls took the floor for their game without their top scorer Halli Fuemmler whose ankle injury hamstrung them in several areas. The Yellowjackets had trouble putting the ball in the basket during the early going in addition to being unable to successfully handle some heavy-duty Marceline pressure.

Glasgow fell behind 9-2 late in the first quarter which led to them spending the rest of the evening playing catch-up. They made several runs at Marceline the rest of the way but came up shy every time. The Yellowjackets did slice the deficit to 12-10 after one period before Marceline regrouped to claim a 24-15 lead at intermission. The Tiger advantage grew to as much as 38-23 during the third quarter, but every time the home team got back within striking distance, Ella Moseley would hit a three-pointer for Marceline to stop Glasgow’s momentum.

It was Moseley who led the Lady Tigers offensively with four threes and a 21-point effort. Meanwhile, Karsyn Massie paced the Glasgow attack with a 15-point performance.

The boys’ fifth seed New Franklin nearly saw their sizable lead evaporate as Cairo clawed back from a 13-point deficit, but the Bulldogs held on for a 59-55 win. The Bulldogs overcome an early 11-6 deficit to score 13 straight points and lead after the first stanza, 19-11. From there, the Bulldog margin grew to 29-16 during the second period before Cairo began to rally. The Bearcats cut the margin to 32-25 at the break and then 43-41 heading into the final frame. But a two-point deficit was the closest Cairo could come.

Jonah Bishop had five threes and 19 points to lead the Bulldogs while Caden Schlotzhauer tacked on 18. Pacing Cairo was Shaun Luecke who scored 16 points as Clayton Messer added 15 in a losing cause.

Meanwhile, both number-one seeds won their matchups pretty easily Tuesday night. The Glasgow boys went on a 23-2 second-period run to lead Marceline, 43-13 at intermission before they eventually posted a 63-24 verdict over the Tigers. Jackson Meyer mustered 27 points and Bronson Foster tallied 22 to pace the victorious Yellowjackets. Tipping off the long evening of basketball, Cairo’s girls had no trouble winning their first-round contest as they were successful against Slater, 76-26. Olivia Cross led the Bearcats with 21 points during the evening.

First-round action continues Wednesday at Glasgow, as Harrisburg have the two seed on both brackets. Both their games are against Fayette, with the girls starting things off at 4:30 p.m. The boys game will follow at 6 p.m., which will be the first of three contests we’ll feature on KMMO-FM 102.9 and online at kmmo.com. Both Westran squads have the three seed, with the girls battling New Franklin at 7:30 p.m. and boys challenging Slater at 9 p.m.
