First round action at the 95th Glasgow Tournament concluded Wednesday, Dec. 3 with one upset among the four games. The only surprise came on the girls’ side where sixth-seeded New Franklin upended third-seeded Westran, 49-31.
Both sides got off to a very slow start in this one as New Franklin built for themselves an 8-2 lead in the early going. Westran eventually came back to tie the score up midway through the opening half before it was New Franklin’s turn to make a sizable run. An ensuing 14-6 outburst by the Bulldogs gave New Franklin a 22-14 advantage at the half. From there, New Franklin extended that margin to as much as 25, leading 45-20 in the fourth quarter before coasting home with a 49-31 victory.
Lilly Chitwood was 12 of 14 at the free throw line for the winners as she tallied 25 points to pace all scorers. Leading Westran offensively was Kate Hollman’s 13 points.
Westran proved to be more successful in their first-round boys’ game late Wednesday as they held off Slater, 68-59. The Hornets fashioned for themselves a 19-13 margin after one period before widening that lead to 35-20 very early in the second half. The rest of the contest, Slater kept slicing into the deficit, cutting the margin to as little as four or five points, only to see the Hornets regroup and build the lead back up to double digits before finishing off a 68-59 decision over the Wildcats.
Three players were in double figures for both teams. Cruze Haynes tallied 21 points while Jordan Black scored 16 and Hayden Chapman had 15 for Westran. Slater was paced by Maddox Tyler’s 22 points as Nixon Sanders tossed in 17 and Tristen Klasing added 10 more.
Kicking off the evening was a doubleheader between two Central States 8 Conference schools with Harrisburg winning a pair of contests from Fayette. The boys’ matchup saw the Bulldogs sprint out to a 12-0 lead the first 90 seconds of the game. Harrisburg was soon on top, 24-10 after one quarter before Fayette responded to battle their opponent on near-even terms the rest of the way with the Bulldogs eventually claiming a 71-56 win. Nash Sublett accounted for 27 points as Rylee Robinson scored 13 and Caleb Nichols tallied 12 for the winners. Fayette was paced by the 22 points which Colton Cross scored.
The first contest of the session was the Harrisburg-Fayette girls game which saw the seventh-seeded Falcons give the second-seeded Bulldogs all they could possibly want for a full 32 minutes. Harrisburg led only 24-22 at intermission with Fayette staying very close until the final two minutes of play before the Lady Bulldogs posted a hard-fought 50-37 win.
