Ball in hoop at basketball game. Athletic competitions and games concept.

A long day of basketball ended late Saturday, Dec. 6 with the crowning of the champions at the 95th Glasgow Tournament.  Westran’s boys and Harrisburg’s girls came away with this year’s titles as they both held off the opposition in the waning moments of their games.

Westran’s boys improved to 5-0 on the season by stopping New Franklin, 48-43.  The Hornets saw an 11-point, first-half lead disintegrate with the Bulldogs rallying to slice the deficit to 30-29 during the latter stages of the third quarter. That preceded Westran responding with a decisive 15-5 run that put them back ahead by double-digits, 45-34 midway through the final frame.  From there, the Hornets held on to win by five, 48-43 as Cruze Haynes scored 16 points for the winners.  New Franklin dropped to 4-1 on the year with Caden Schlotzhauer tallying 15 on their behalf.

In the girls’ championship game, Harrisburg’s path to their 53-49 win over Marceline began when they turned things around with a huge, second-quarter explosion.  Marceline had started the game strong by building for themselves a 17-8 advantage after the opening eight minutes.  Harrisburg then retaliated by scoring 19 of the next 20 points to lead 27-18 just before intermission.  The Tigers did trail throughout the last half before making a late run and getting within two, 49-47 in the final half minute, But a turnover led to a Harrisburg lay in which the Lady Bulldogs then followed up with two free  throws before claiming their 53-49 victory.

It was the first time the Harrisburg girls had won the Glasgow Tournament since 2014.  Lorelai Hunziker had 16 points with Audrey Arnold scoring 13 for the 4-0 Harrisburg girls.  Marceline dropped to 3-1 on the season as Ella Moseley tallied 12 points and Emerlad Bloss added 11 for the Tigers.

In Saturday’s other scores from Glasgow:

  • Boys’ third place went to the host Yellowjackets as they beat Harrisburg, 67-53. Glasgow led this game by 24 points during the third quarter before Harrisburg chopped the deficit down to nine with five minutes left. Glasgow did eventually stop the Bulldog momentum by increasing the lead back to double digits before breezing their way to the final horn.  Jackson Meyer tossed in 28 points for the Yellowjackets while Rylee Robinson scored 14 and Evan Freeman
    tallied 12 for Harrisburg.
  • Girls’ third place was claimed by New Franklin who trailed Cairo, 28-23 at the half before rallying to beat the Bearcats, 52-44. It snapped a streak of 13 straight losses by New Franklin to the Cairo girls dating back to February of 2016.  Lilly Chitwood fired home 27 points for 4-1 New Franklin with Olivia Cross and Chloe Brumley tallying 13 and 10 respectively for the Bearcats.
  • Boys’ consolation saw Marceline surrender the 38-23 lead they held against Slater during the third quarter prior to recovering in time to edge the Wildcats, 57-55.  Weston Molloy paced the Tigers with 15 points while Nixon Sanders tallied 20 and Maddox Tyler scored 16 to lead Slater in a losing cause.
