The Kansas City Chiefs will go without playoff football for the first time in 11 seasons after being shut out in the second half to fall to the Los Angeles Chargers 16-13 on Sunday, Dec. 14. More crucially, they will close out the season without Patrick Mahomes, after he tore the ACL in his left knee.

The Chiefs confirmed the injury Sunday night in a brief statement, saying that the team and Mahomes are exploring their surgery options. The injury occurred as Mahomes was leading the Chiefs down the field just after the two-minute warning, when a Chargers defender pulled him down as he was making a pass attempt. Gardner Minshew entered the game to continue the drive, completing three of his five attempts, but also throwing an interception from the Chargers 39 to seal the game.

The game had started well for Kansas City, as Mahomes scored on the Chiefs’ opening drive with a 12-yard run.  The Chargers would respond with a field goal on their opening drive. Kansas City would add their remaining points in the second quarter with Harrison Butker field goals of 27 and 47 yards. A 34-yard kick return and 37-yard pass play set up the Chargers’ only touchdown with five seconds to go in the half, a 16-yard pass from Justin Herbert to KeAndre Lambert-Smith.

The second half saw the Chargers tie the game on their first possession with Cameron Dicker’s 23-yard field goal, then lace through the game-winner from 49 yards with 51 seconds left in the third. The Chiefs had a chance to take the lead early in the fourth, but Mahomes’ pass on third-and-12 from the Chargers 17 was intercepted by Daiyan Henley.

Mahomes went 16 for 28 for 189 yards, while rushing for another 15 yards. He was sacked five times for 21 yards. The Chiefs were limited to just 49 yards on the ground, while in the air Travis Kelce hauled in seven catches for 70 yards while Rashee Rice also brought in seven catches for 51 yards. For the Chargers, Justin Herbert went 19 for 29, throwing for 210 yards. Omarion Hampton carried the ball 15 times for 61 yards.

The Chiefs are now 6-8 and, coupled with wins Sunday by the Bills, Jaguars and Texans, will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2014. The Chiefs will visit the Tennessee Titans next week in Nashville. Pregame coverage will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday on KMMO-FM 102.9, with kickoff from Nissan Stadium at noon.
