A Brookfield couple is facing a charge of child endangerment after their two-month-old son was pronounced dead at an area hospital last week.
Probable cause statements accuse 20-year-old Angelica Fesler-Ramos and 20-year-old Caleb Colkers of failing to properly feed their son. The two brought their son to a Brookfield hospital the morning of Dec. 13, expressing concerns about malnutrition. Staff at the hospital pronounced their son deceased. Investigators with the Missouri State Technical Assistance Team say that the couple had recently move to the area from Tennessee, where a hospital there found that the infant had lost 22 percent of his weight within ten days of birth. According to the investigator’s statement, the couple complained about their child not eating enough, but did not follow through on a doctor’s recommendation that they supplement the infant’s feeding with formula. Fesler-Ramos is alleged to have told investigators that she only wanted to breastfeed the child, similar to how she fed older child. Investigators also say that the couple was receiving state benefits and had the means to provide milk supplementation.
The two were charged Thursday with first degree endangerment leading to a child’s death. Each is in the Macon County Jail on $100,000 bond. Fesler-Ramos was arraigned Thursday morning on the charge, while Colkers’ arraignment is scheduled for Monday morning.
