Sporting Kansas City is turning to Switzerland for their next head coach.
Sporting announced Monday, Jan. 5 that Raphaël Wicky would take the helm, becoming SKC’s fifth manager in team history. It’ll be Wicky’s second stint in Major League Soccer, having spent two seasons coaching the Chicago Fire before returning to Switzerland to take over BSC Young Boys. Wicky guided Young Boys to the domestic double in 2023, winning the Swiss Super League and Swiss Cup, and an appearance in the group stage of the following season’s UEFA Champions League. He was on track to lead Young Boys to a second straight league title before he was sacked in March 2024 with 12 games remaining.
Across four teams including the United States men’s U-17 squad, Wicky has collected a 110-63 record with 47 draws. His contract with Sporting will see him manage through the 2027-28 season, with a club option for 2028-29.
