The Sedalia City Council approved two changes to their engine braking ordinance Monday, Jan. 5, after receiving input from the Missouri Department of Transportation on how to implement the prohibition initially passed in May.

City administrator Matthew Wirt says the changes reflect requirements that MoDOT has in place before they’ll allow the installation of signs along state right-of-way informing drivers that a “Jake Brake” ordinance is in effect.

Wirt says while MoDOT normally places engine brake ordinance signs at the city limits, the city is exploring if signs could be placed closer to neighborhoods where residents regularly complain about brake use.

The amended ordinance also adds language on the signs the city can request from MoDOT. The signs can also stipulate a requirement that engine brakes have a muffler to reduce the brakes’ sound and vibration.

Also Monday night, the Sedalia City Council approved an annexation and utility services agreement with a resident on West Country Club Drive, and inked an agreement with S&A Equipment of Fulton for a number of sidewalk replacement projects this year, totaling $477,859.20.
