A recent inductee into the National Soccer Hall of Fame will make his way to the Riverfront to become the Kansas City Current’s next head coach.
The National Women’s Soccer League franchise announced Wednesday, Jan. 7 the hiring of Chris Armas, who recently departed the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer. The 53-year-old Armas coached the Rapids to a third-place finish in this past season’s Leagues Cup, but was let go at the season’s end when the Rapids finished 11th in the Western Conference.
It’ll be the second time Armas coaches a women’s team, as he was the head coach of his alma mater, the Adelphi Panthers in NCAA’s Division II, from 2011 to 2015. His coaching résumé includes a three-year stint as manager of the New York Red Bulls, as well as a brief spell with Toronto FC and on the coaching staffs of England’s Manchester United and Leeds United. Armas’ playing career as a defensive midfielder included two seasons with the LA Galaxy and another ten with the Chicago Fire, netting 12 goals in 264 appearances and MVP honors in the 2002 season when the Chicago Fire finished atop the regular season standings. He also recorded two goals with the U.S. Men’s National team across 66 appearances.
In the team’s announcement, Current co-owners Angie and Chris Long say that Armas will bring, “an abundance of experience at the highest levels both as a coach and a player and shares in our long-term vision of the Kansas City Current being the best women’s football club in the world.” Armas takes over for Vlatko Andonovski, who stepped aside as head coach in November to assume a front-office role as the Current’s global sporting director.
