State Fair Community College has been awarded $75,270 by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) through its Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training (CMVOST) grant.
This funding will offset the cost of tuition for veterans and their family members in SFCC’s Commercial Driving Academy, helping expand the number of Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders receiving advanced safety training.
FMCSA is awarding more than $3.4 million to educational institutions, associations, and government entities through the CMVOST grant program. The program aims to reduce the number and severity of crashes involving large trucks and buses by ensuring that more drivers enter the workforce with robust safety training.
SFCC’s Commercial Driving Academy is a 4-week program teaching theory, pre-trip, range and behind-the-wheel training maneuvers and road skills. Training is supported by truck-driving simulation to teach manual transmission shifting and educate students of the spatial requirements needed for a large Commercial Motor Vehicle to improve the students’ proficiency and safety. Students earn their Class A CDL license upon successful completion of the course.
