A new location is in the works for a drive-up mailbox near the Marshall City Office Building, but city officials say the U.S. Postal Service has yet to commit to reinstalling one.

City administrator JD Kehrman provided an update at last week’s city council meeting on efforts to install a replacement box, after the previous one to the west of the city offices was ripped from its pedestal by vandals last May. Kehrman says after discussions, the city decided to switch the location for the next box.

Municipal Works crews have spent the past week preparing the new site at a lot on the northeast corner of Jefferson and Marion, while removing the concrete island that housed the previous box. However, Kehrman says the city still has one final hurdle to clear: convincing the Postal Service to install a new box.

Kehrman adds that the city and post office will need to sign a formal agreement allowing the installation of a mailbox to take place on city property.
