A grand jury in Lafayette County has indicted an Alma man on multiple felony counts of sexual misconduct involving children.

The indictment released Friday charges 43-year-old Jeremy D Stephens with two counts each of using a child in a sexual performance, sexual misconduct involving a child under 15, and eight counts of possessing child pornography. According to a probable cause statement, investigators with the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department learned from one of the victims that Stephens had allegedly spoken to the victim about an adult subject, claiming it was for an educational purpose, and on multiple occasions had shown the victim explicit videos. Deputies say Stephens had also purchased an aide device for the victim, which the victim’s mother later found.

When questioned by authorities, Stephens denied buying the device, and told deputies he had only shown a video from YouTube. Deputies had earlier executed a search warrant on Stephens’ residence, turning up several electronic devices. The indictment accuses Stephens of furnishing pornographic materials to the minor over a two-year span, and possessed the materials as early as July 2023.

Stephens was initially arrested and charged last September in Lafayette County Circuit Court. Upon the grand jury indictment, his bond of $250,000 was revoked, requiring him to remain held without bond. His arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at Lafayette Hall.
