The Moberly Police Department is investigating a series of reported check fraud cases involving payments mailed to Ameren’s post office box.

Victims report that checks mailed as bill payments to PO Box 88068, Chicago, IL 60680-1068, were altered through a process commonly referred to as “check washing,” in which the original payee or amount is removed and replaced. The check is then used as payment to other businesses or individuals.

Detectives with the Moberly Police Department are actively investigating these incidents and are working closely with Ameren fraud investigators as part of the ongoing effort to identify those responsible. The Moberly Police Department encourages residents and businesses to take precautions when mailing checks, including:

• Monitoring bank statements closely for unauthorized transactions
• Reporting suspicious activity immediately to financial institutions
• Considering electronic or online payment options when available

Customers with concerns about check payments made to Ameren may pay online at Ameren.com or through Speedpay at 866-268-3729. For a local, in-person payment option, Bratcher’s Market on South Morley offers an Ameren payment kiosk that accepts cash or check payments only.

Anyone who believes they may be a victim of similar fraud or has information related to these incidents is encouraged to contact the Moberly Police Department at 660-263-0346.
