The Kansas City Zoo could have a pack of lions just outside their gates this spring.

A report from the BBC over the weekend was the latest to indicate that England’s men’s national team are seeking to set up their training camp ahead of this summer’s World Cup at the Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City. The report says that England’s Football Association submitted the request to FIFA, who are expected to announce where each of the 48 nations competing will set up their camps this spring. England is among several nations that had been eying the Kansas City area, even as they announced an initial camp and a pair of friendlies in Florida this May. The Three Lions are in Group L and will have their first three games in Dallas, Boston, and New York.

Swope Soccer Village is home to Sporting Kansas City’s reserve squad and was the MLS franchise’s training facility for several years. The fields at Swope Park also hosted the NCAA Division II national tournament from 2013 to 2019, including the 2017 women’s championship won by Central Missouri. It wasn’t among the initial sites FIFA had listed as potential training camps, but was recently added amid increased demand for locations in the Heartland. Sporting’s training grounds in Kansas City, Kansas, along with the Kansas City Current’s facilities in Riverside and the University of Kansas, are also being sought by World Cup favorites including defending champions Argentina, who will start group play June 16 at Arrowhead.
