A Sedalia man is facing several felony charges, accused of striking a patrol vehicle in the city limits, and then leaving the scene of the accident Monday, Jan. 26.
According to a probable cause statement, a vehicle driven by Leopoldo Rubio Leon ran a stop sign and struck the patrol vehicle at the intersection of South Osage Avenue and West Broadway Boulevard. Leon reportedly stopped for a moment, then fled the scene north on South Osage.
The law enforcement officer was treated for bruises and fractured ribs while his vehicle sustained extensive damage. The front license plate of Leon’s vehicle was located at the crash scene as the Missouri State Highway Patrol investigated.
Officers with the Sedalia Police Department located Leon in his vehicle parked outside a residence on Wilkerson Street. Officers noted a strong odor of intoxicants as they were detaining Leon, and an open beer can in the vehicle.
Officers say Leon admitted to having several drinks at a friend’s house before attempting to drive home. Breath samples showed that Leon had Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 0.194 at the time of his detainment.
Leon is facing charges for leaving the scene of an accident and DWI causing physical injury to emergency personnel. His bond was set at $15,000 cash or surety.
Leon was due for arraignment on Tuesday. No other court appearances have been scheduled at this time.
