Marshall Municipal Services Committee members Dan Brandt and Drew Green met Thursday afternoon to discuss information regarding the city’s proposed half-cent sales tax for street improvements, which will appear on the General Municipal Election ballot in April.
The revenue generated from this tax would be used entirely for the construction and repair of city streets. Brandt explains that the tax would generate about $1,000,000 in revenue a year and sunset after three years.
The committee decided to schedule a public town hall meeting to inform voters about why the city is pursuing the tax. The meeting is tentatively scheduled to be held on Thursday, February 19th. The exact time and place is still to be determined. The city also plans to update its website to include more information about the tax, including a list of streets that the city will focus on over the next three years.
The committee then reviewed a proposed street plan from Municipal Services Director Randy Cornine, highlighting several streets the department wants to focus on as soon as possible. The department’s top priority is West College Street and the portion of South Miami Avenue in front of Marshall High School. Brandt says the street plan could change depending on a number of factors.
Information on the street plan will also be discussed during the town hall in a few weeks. The Marshall City Council’s next meeting is set for Tuesday, February 17th.
