Ball in hoop at basketball game. Athletic competitions and games concept.

After playing their opponent on near-even terms for a half, the Pilot Grove Tigers began the third quarter with an 11-2 run which cleared the way for them to win pretty comfortably at Concordia on Wednesday, Feb. 4, beating the Orioles, 68-48 in action that was heard on KMMO-FM.

A flurry of five Concordia three-pointers, four of them coming from Nephi Hon, kept the home team in the game for the first two periods as a slumping Oriole squad trailed Pilot Grove only 16-15 following the opening eight minutes and then 27-24 at intermission. The last two quarters belonged solely to the Tigers who led 49-34 after three frames before coasting home with their 20-point, 68-48 victory over Concordia.

Improving to 13-8 on the year, the Tigers had three players in double figures. Lyle Christy mustered 19 points while Ryland Skaggs added 18 and Tyson Martin chipped in with 13. For the Orioles, the loss was their sixth in a row as they dropped to 6-13 overall. Nephi Hon paced the losing side with 20 points as Brody Willis tacked on 12.

Earlier in the evening, the girls’ matchup was pretty much over before it began. It took visiting Pilot Grove 11 and a half minutes just to score as they lost to Concordia, 52-12. The Orioles led the Tigers, 15-0 after one period and then 30-4 at the break, prior to wrapping up their 40-point victory over the CAC team.

Now 10-9 for the season, Alex Oetting knocked down four threes and scored 12 points to pace Concordia while Kynleigh Abney tallied 11 and Ava Mueller contributed 10 of her own. Meanwhile, no one scored more than four points for a Pilot Grove squad that fell to 3-17 on the year.
