Marshall Public Schools could end the current school year not having to dip as much into their reserves as initially budgeted.

At the Tuesday, Feb. 10 Board of Education meeting, Marshall Supt. Caleb Petet provided a quarterly update for the district’s budget, which shows the district having received $14,544,090.13 thus far in the school year, with expenses totaling $17,114,128.96. Compared to what was budgeted, revenue is just under 43 percent of total budgeted figures, while expenses current sit at 51.4%.  He tells KMMO News that the district’s efforts to keep expenses manageable has helped to reduce their planned deficit spend for the year.

The district recently confirmed the completion of the Marshall Intermediate School construction project, releasing $987,000 to other facility improvements needed around the district. Petet says that includes conversion of another building that remains at the former Habilitation Center to the district’s new bus barn.

Among actions taken by the board Tuesday night, the board approved a memorandum of understanding establishing a chapter of the Jobs for America’s Graduates program at Marshall. The vote came after four students in the JAG program at Brookfield delivered a presentation on how the program has benefited them. Board members also approved the substitute teacher list and a contract that will cover 80 percent of the cost for updated servers, switches, and access points for the district’s technology infrastructure.
