With more than a full week left in the regular season, the Lafayette County Husker boys have nailed down this winter’s MRVC East basketball championship, outlasting Carrollton 49-43 on Thursday, Feb. 12 in Higginsville, in action heard on KMMO.

The victory gives Coach Jim Stoner’s Huskers an 8-0 MRVC record with two games left on their schedule, as all of the other teams in the league have suffered at least three losses so far. This MRVC East crown is the fourth one earned by the Huskers in the past five years and the win serves as the 35th in succession for Lafayette County over the Trojans in boys’ basketball, dating back to the 2010-2011 campaign.

Much like the Huskers’ 71-66 overtime win at Carrollton last month, this contest proved to be a tight battle. The two sides traded the lead more than once during the first three quarters. Carrollton was on top, 12-11 after one period before the Huskers owned a 20-18 advantage at the half and then led 37-33 entering the final eight minutes of play. Down the stretch, Lafayette County pulled away at the free throw line, hitting eight consecutive charity tosses during the final 90 seconds, which came courtesy of Clay Aversman and Parson Stoner. Their success turned a one-possession game into an eight-point lead with the Huskers eventually winning by six, 49-43.

Now 19-5 on the year, the home team received 12 points from both Clay Aversman and Kadin Aversman, Chipping in with an 11-point effort was Parson Stoner. Carrollton fell to 3-4 in the league and 15-7 overall as Jackson Davis tossed in 13 points and Liem Potter contributed 12 on their behalf. The Trojans are already assured of recording their first winning season since 2012.
