Two area girls wrestling programs finished as district runners-up over the weekend, as area grapplers continued their march toward the state podium at Mizzou Arena later this month.

Brookfield finished second at the Class One, District Two tournament hosted at Mexico. Jayden Keller led the way for the Bulldogs, continuing her defense of last year’s state title at 110 pounds by claiming victories by fall in all five of her bouts, the longest taking 75 seconds. Three other Bulldogs finished second in their weight class, including another state finisher from last year, Hadlye Sackrey.

Marshall finished tenth in the team standings, led by Sian Palmer at 115 pounds. She claimed a 5-3 decision in the title match against Brookfield’s Dylan Parn. Braylee Farr also qualified for state at 120 pounds, finishing third. Also at this district, Moberly’s Breanne Gibbs remains on track to defend her state title at 145 pounds, defeating all five her opponents with falls in less than a minute. Alivia Bottoms of Boonville won the district title at 130 pounds, only conceding three points in her opening contest against Centralia’s Alyssa Bodine.

At District Three in Buffalo, Odessa finished a half-point ahead of Adrian for second. Defending state champion Emily Bischoff recorded victories by fall in all five of her contests to win the 130-pound district title, as did teammate Bella Palmer in the 145-pound weight class. Aalyiah Sanders will return to state with a third-place finish at 120 pounds. Lone Jack placed fourth, with defending state champ Lillian McCleary recording three falls in under a minute before reaching the district title bout, where she needed just under five minutes to humble Marshfield’s Carlynn Mynatt. Two other wrestlers from Lone Jack also qualified.

Lafayette County qualified four wrestlers for state including Lorelei Weaver, who won the 155-pound weight class by recording falls over Wylie Smith of Odessa and Addie Davis of Adrian despite trailing both of them in decision points when the falls occurred. Three area wrestlers also won district titles. Kimber Drenon of Windsor booked a return trip to state by repeating as district champ at 100 pounds, recording all four falls in under a minute, including taking just 12 seconds to pin Chloe Zeller of Stover in the championship bout. Macey Green of Holden won the 110-pound title, while Elizabeth Calton brought the 140-pound title back to Versailles.

Defending champs Kearney dominated the District Four meet they hosted, with Lexington finishing fourth to lead area teams. The Minutemen qualified three for state, with two runners-up and a third-place finish. Polo also qualified three wrestlers, including Allexa Storts, who recorded a scoreless fall in the second period to win the 145-pound district title. Miah Parker of Gallatin won the district’s 235-pound title.

The Class One girls state tournament is set for Feb. 25-26, with Class Two girls competing Feb. 27-28.  District tournaments for boys teams will take place this weekend.
