Centralia and Odessa held on during the championship bouts, claiming narrow point margins to successfully repeat as state champions in boys wrestling Thursday, Feb. 26 in Columbia.

In Class Two, Makai Smalley and Jet Brown claimed individual titles to lead Odessa to a three-point victory over Seneca. Smalley secured a fall in the third period of his bout at 138 pounds against Seneca’s Eli Manley, while Brown capped his season with an 87-second technical fall over Drake Meyer of Ste Genevieve in the 150-pound title match. Seneca had three wrestlers win titles, including Jace Renfro at 190 pounds when he won by an 8-3 decision over Odessa’s Michael Scott. Kamden Hooper at 144 pounds and Lake Waters at 157 pounds each finished third for Odessa.

Oak Grove finished seventh in the team standings, with Kale Martin winning the battle of undefeated wrestlers at 106 pounds in an 8-4 decision over Trevor Cole of Mexico. Victor Schmalz of Pleasant Hill won the 120-pound class with a 9-4 decision win over Paxton Crane of Hallsville.

It was a much closer margin of victory for Centralia this season, as they held off Marceline to repeat as Class One boys champions. Rex Bryson completed a perfect season with his 49th win at 175 pounds coming in the state final against Jack Sportsman of Marceline. Marceline had one of their wrestlers also complete a perfect season, when Carter Wallis secured a major decision over Centralia’s Charles Robinson at 138 pounds. Reece Stufflebean also finished second for Marceline at 113 pounds, when he was defeated by Jayce Estes of Warsaw; that was another state title for Estes as his season wrapped up at 54-1. Estes’ performance led Warsaw to a fifth-place team finish.

Lawson finished sixth, followed by Brookfield. Gallatin finished 12th but are celebrating two state champions, with Eli Sperry going 50-0 this year following a technical fall of Lathrop’s Drake Coots in the 144-pound title match, while Nicholas Larsen locked down the 106-pound title with a major decision over Windsor’s Nico Punshon. Conner Menke of Lawson prevailed in the 150-pound title bout over Corbin Kelly of Carrollton, needing 80 seconds to record the fall.

The Class One girls meet saw Brookfield finished third, led by Jayden Keller’s four-peat. The senior landed a 10-1 major decision win over Myle Woolridge to win the 110-pound title. Lillian McCleary of Lone Jack repeat as a state champion when she defeated Carlynn Mynatt of Marshfield for the 115-pound title.  McCleary got past Dylan Parn of Brookfield in the semifinal, who went on to finish sixth. Marshall’s Sian Palmer finished fourth in the weight class, defeating Park in the wrestlebacks before being brought down by a fall in the second period of the bout against Mallori Edwards of Eldon.

Odessa’s Emily Bischoff also claimed a repeat state title, winning the 130-pound class with a fall in just 17 seconds of Carl Junction’s Bella Montez.  Lorelei Weaver of Lafayette County also claimed a consecutive title, winning at 155 pounds by way of a major decision over Addie Davis of Adrian.  However, Breanne Gibbs of Moberly was unable to defend her state title and undefeated season at 145 pounds, when Zafran Satterfield of Southern Boone recorded a fall in 2:26. Gibbs had recorded wins by fall in her three previous matches, all within 30 seconds.  Kimber Drenon of Windsor finished third in the 100-pound class with a 3-1 decision win over Milanya Drummond of De Soto.  Drenon was defeated in her semifinal by eventual state champion Lexi Wolk of Ste Genevieve.
